Jason Mraz at the Palace

Cat, Kim and I went to the Palace theater built in 1927. It's a nice venue, probably my favourite in Melbourne because it is smaller and has good acoustics.

We saw supporting acts Lisa Mitchell who has an interesting whispy voice. She seemed to be absolutely honoured to be playing at the Palace, its nice to feel that someone appreciates an opportunity.

The second supporting act was Eric Hutchinson who has risen to popularity on Australian radio with his hit “Rock & Roll”. For me he was a ‘you know the song but now the artist’. He was a fantastic performer, one of the best I’ve ever seen. He was enthusiastic but not over the top and engaged the audience immediately.

So I have been back for 17 days....

...and things are still a bit depressing. I wonder how long this takes to wear off? It's all in the mind Cara!

On a slightly more positive note I attended the Sound Relief concert at the MCG with my old friend Dave and that was awesome! I saw Crowded house, Hunters and Collectors and Midnight Oil live for the first (and probably last) time! There were many more acts that played at the concert but these three classic Australian rock bands reformed for the concert and were wonderful, as was the atmosphere when 80,000 people sung along to some of the most famous songs in Australian music history. As Australian as veggiemite, BBQs and multiculturalism. Photos soon....as soon as I am not overwhelmingly apathetic and a can be bothered to put them up!

A rare sighting of the Cara raiding the fridge.

Welcome back to Melbourne!

Welcome back to:

...sunny days and beautiful skies
...unpredictable weather (4 seasons in 1 day) and random humidity
...canceled trains, beeping doors, running for the train (aka: frustration)
...no products containing high-fructose corn syrup
...gold coinage and plastic brightly coloured bills
...making a reference to an Australian TV ad/commercial and someone understands
...being accent-ally confused (and constantly getting asked where I'm from or am I on holiday! oh, endless explanations)
...having a closet
...having dogs (that bark) and cats (that have hair...lots of hair)
...a new University that's more disorganized then the last
...timetables, textbooks, impersonal giant university where you don't know everybody
...Mother's kisses
...chocolate in abundance from Hahndorfs...ohhh, the dark chocolate moose is so gooood!
...new Australian books! the Obernewtyn chronicles are finished and I am voraciously reading book 5
...always asking for the time (no watch, no phone)
...a small-ish city
...a local feel (our local pizza is the best in the world!)
...a home for Adults not a student house
...TV (it's everywhere! in my home, in my friends homes...blah! I am trying to stick to my principles)
...big M flavored milk
...things costing more
...terribly terribly awful horrible fashion. Welcome to the 80's, the confused 80's
...and more being asked where I am from all the time...I'm from here!
...a land downunder, a sunburnt country...home...my other home

Readjusting to Oz, baby steps.

I have been slowly and surely getting things accomplished.

Monday I arrived.

Tuesday I went into the city and got Orientated. I signed up for classes and bought a concession card for the train.

Wednesday I unpacked my suitcases, got my bike down from the garage roof and found it to have flat tyres and no pump.

Yesterday (Thurs) , I went to my Orientation session at RMIT and learned more about the equipment...tricky business. On the way home to Camberwell to my bank (Vic teach credit union- gives back to the community) and got my card activated. I pumped up my bike tyres and got out the shelving for my desk which I can't put up for lack of essential dowels and prongs.

Today I went into my Mum's chocie shop with her and worked for a few hours foiling chocolates. Then I came home and talked to my Nana re:Hawaii flight and holiday etc... I found out I am in trouble on that one because my family goes to Hawaii July 20th and that is the day my school re-starts. I thought I had it all worked out but apparently not. So now I have to chat to my teachers and see if I can miss some classes to go to the USA for USA Summer 2009.

The I saw my best friend Kristel for the first time since being home. She is great! I saw her house and the cutest Burmese kitten ever (they are beautiful cats...when I get a cat I want one!). Together we fixed my horrid facebook (I had invites and rubbish everywhere) and now I am printing of scholarship applications for RMIT.

There is no place like home- Back to Oz!

YESTERDAY:

So I departed San Fran at 12:15pm on Saturday, Feb 21st . I met my grandparents in LA for a stroll by the marina and then a surprise dinner with my Aunt, Uncle and cousin Kaylen! The it was back to the airport for an 8pm flight to Auckland, then layover, then onto Melbourne! I arrived in Melbourne at 9:40am on Monday, Feb 23rd! Time flies when you'e having fun!

I think I have been up for about 48 hours...
I think I am delusional!

TODAY:
Last night when I was finally trying to go to sleep I realized that I should check my University email because I someone mentioned that a University orientation session. And sure enough, that's where I was today! Exhausted. I met the first year course co-coordinator and signed up for subjects to get a good timetable giving me Thursday off. I managed to avoid the Saturday classes (not good seeing as I will be commuting 45 mins into the city).

Victoria's fires and an amazing photo!

Local CFA firefighter David Tree shares his water with an injured Australian Koala at Mirboo North after wildfires swept through the region on Monday, Feb. 9, 2009. (AP Photo/Mark Pardew)

HEALESVILLE, Australia – The koala moved gingerly on scorched paws, crossing the blackened landscape as the fire patrol passed.

Clearly in pain, the animal stopped when it saw firefighter David Tree following behind.

"It was amazing, he turned around, sat on his bum and sort of looked at me with (a look) like, put me out of my misery," Tree told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "I yelled out for a bottle of water. I unscrewed the bottle, tipped it up on his lips and he just took it naturally. He kept reaching for the bottle, almost like a baby."

The team called animal welfare officers as it resumed its patrols on Sunday, the day after deadly firestorms swept southern Victoria state.

"I love nature, and I've handled koalas before. They're not the friendliest things, but I wanted to help him," Tree said.

Tree says he's spoken to wildlife officials, and the koala, nicknamed Sam, is doing fine. And he, it turns out, is a she.

The rescue was one small bright moment in Australia's wildfire tragedy. Thousands of acres (hectares) have been burned out, almost 1,000 homes destroyed and more than 180 people killed.

Countless animals were killed in the disaster, which hit farming and forest regions to the north and east of the Victoria state capital of Melbourne, and many more fled in panic.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Animals said it was establishing shelters to care for thousands of pets and livestock affected by the disaster.
